LGBT Special Events

This year, WorldPride comes to New York! From fireworks over Niagara Falls to a party on the beach, it’s easy to plan your ultimate LGBT vacation to New York State!

In June of 2019, WorldPride comes to New York City to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. Millions of visitors will be coming to the city to celebrate—and there will be exciting commemorative events all across the state.

Start things off with the Albany Symphony for “Sing Out, New York!”, a national music festival and regional tour of free outdoor concerts in celebration of the Stonewall uprising, WorldPride 2019, and the women’s suffrage movement (May 28–June 9). Or head to the beach on Long Island for a three-day destination weekend known as Pride on the Beach, with more than 30 LGBT events planned, including the Twilight Beach Party and infamous Concert on the Beach (June 21–23). Continue the fun in scenic Long Island Wine Country on the North Fork for Pride on the Vines on June 25, which features guided tours with tastings, receptions, and parties.

The celebration of Stonewall 50 continues at the Chautauqua Institution on July 2 as they host a special conversation with Bishop Gene Robinson, who made worldwide headlines when he was named the Episcopal church's first openly gay bishop. They will discuss the building of America’s LGBT community through major events including Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, and marriage equality.

Finally, no New York State celebration would be complete without an event at Niagara Falls. On July 5th, visitors can celebrate WorldPride and Stonewall 50 at a natural wonder of the world and the United State's oldest state park. Pride at the Falls will feature a free concert by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, with fireworks and the falls lit in rainbow colors.

There are also numerous LGBT-friendly destinations throughout the state from the funky neighborhoods of Buffalo (including Ani DiFranco’s Babeville), the beaches of Fire Island, and the sculptures of Storm King. A more extensive vacation gets you hiking in the Adirondacks, sipping wine in the Finger Lakes, and riding the country’s highest and longest zip line in the Catskills!

In New York State, LGBT special events mean Pride—and a whole lot more. From LGBT film festivals in Rochester and Long Island to the Fire Island Dance Festival, and from the annual LGBT Expo at New York City's Javits Center to an Oz-Stravaganza in the Wizard of Oz author's hometown of Chittenango, there is always an excuse to have a gay old time all year long.
