Albany's skyline gives you a sense of the state capital's rich mix of history and the present day. Take a walk downtown for a close-up view of the city’s eclectic architecture. Built in the style of a French chateau, the
State Capitol has ornate details like a "Million Dollar Staircase" carved with 300 portraits of famous New Yorkers. Have a look and see how many you know. The
Palace Theatre has been restored to its classical opulence, including a marquee just like the 1930s original.
See a play at
Capital Repertory Theatre, another gem, and there's a chance you'll be able to say you saw it first when it next opens on Broadway. The
Empire State Plaza, a 1970s-era marble complex, is highlighted by
The Egg, a performance center that's a work of art in itself. Nearby, the
New York State Museum chronicles the unique heritage of each region of the state and is the home of a moving September 11 exhibit.
You can also tour the city on the
Albany Aqua Ducks, amphibious vehicles that roll through historic neighborhoods and then splash down into the river for a water view. Cruises on the
Dutch Apple include sightseeing, dinner and moonlight dancing.
Check out special events commemorating the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival. Visit in May, and you'll see thousands of tulips in bloom for the Tulip Festival.
