The Flea Theater was founded in 1996 with the mission to raise a joyful hell in a small space. We seek to embody the spirit of adventure and experiment that has defined Off-Off-Broadway since its inception, and our two tiny theaters are in constant action with as many as 380 performances each year. Eclectic seasons are our trademark and our stages always embody a wide range of styles, viewpoints and cultures.
Our commitment to the Off-Off-Broadway aesthetic means we choose to stay agile, unconventional and small. A theatergoing experience at The Flea is intimate and immersive, designed to create an active relationship between artist and audience member. This approach has allowed us to build one of the youngest and most ethnically diverse demographics in the industry. Our body of work has consistently been recognized by critics and the community at large, earning us Obies, an Otto and a Drama Desk Award for our "sustained commitment to adventurous theater."
