An official Path Through History Site! The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States and the first steel-wire suspension bridge in the world. Opened with much fanfare in 1883, its main span of more than 1,595 feet connected Manhattan to Brooklyn and made it the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1903. The bridge contains a pedestrian walkway popular with locals and tourists alike that offers spectacular views of New York harbor.
