Fort Montgomery State Historic Site

An official Path Through History Site! Scene of a fierce Revolutionary War battle for control of the Hudson River. On October 6, 1777, British, Loyalist and Hessian forces attacked Fort Montgomery and nearby Fort Clinton. The defending American Patriots, outnumbered three to one, fought courageously, but were ultimately defeated. Learn about this important site at the visitor center and through interpretative programs with costumed staff. Hiking trails travel past historic ruins of the buildings and earthworks. The property offers beautiful views of the Hudson River and a footbridge crosses Popolopen Creek to connect with the Trailside Museum and Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park.
