An official Path Through History Site! The Military Museum's core exhibits include: "Battleground For Freedom: New York During the Revolutionary War; "A Call Not Unheeded: New York's Militia and National Guard, 1792-1916"; Fiery Trial and Sacrifice: New York and the First World War; World War II: United for Victory.", "Empire for Union", New York State in the Civil War, and the newest permanent exhibit “Hot Spots in the Cold War”, on the Korean and Vietnam War. The Military Museum maintains the largest state collection of military battle flags, the largest collection of Civil War flags in the country ad also manages the NYS Veterans Oral History Program.Housing more than 10,000 artifacts dating from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm that relate to NYS’s military forces, military history, and the contributions of NY’s veterans, including uniforms, weapons, artillery pieces, and art. A significant portion of the museum’s collection is from the Civil War. Notable artifacts from this conflict include Colonel Elmer Ellsworth’s (the Union’s first martyr) uniform, the medical kit of Jubal Early’s surgeon, and the uniform and bugle of Gustav Schurmann (General Philip Kearny’s boy bugler). Included in the museum are significant holdings relating to NY’s 27th Division in World War I and World War II and notable state military regiments such as the 7th (Silk Stocking Regiment), 69th (Fighting Irish), 71st, and 369th (Harlem Hell fighters) New York Infantry.
