Grimes Glen Park
NEWSLETTER
Grimes Glen is a serene and natural wonder just minutes from downtown Naples, where history and wild beauty converge to make a captivating outdoor experience.
The Glen is best known for its two stunning 60-foot waterfalls, where you can wade gently upstream or walk along the shaded and often wet forest path. Grimes Glen offers more than natural beauty – it holds a remarkable place in New York State History. In 1882, local geologist and Naples native D. Dana Luther discovered what would become known as the Naples Devonian Tree, the oldest fossilized tree ever found in New York. This prehistoric relic, unearthed from the glen’s stone bed, was later relocated to the New York State Museum in Albany, where it remains on display. Luther, a passionate student of geology and long-serving State Museum staff member, left behind a legacy honored in a historical pamphlet still available from the Naples Historical Society.
Visitor Tips
After crossing the footbridge upon arrival, simply follow the marked trail to the first waterfall, which is partially paved. The remainder of the "trail" requires crossing Grimes Creek to get to the other falls; traversing these falls is at your own risk. Depending on the season, this can be a foot or more deep. There's also a bit of scrambling on slippery surfaces. Water shoes or sturdy waterproof boots are highly recommended.
