The diverse history of Wayne County spans over two centuries, you can experience the rich tapestry of people and stories through an impressive collection of artifacts and folklore located in this 2,500-square foot, 2-story, Italianate residence built by the county in 1855 to house the Sheriff’s family, his county officers, and the county jail. Visitors can explore more than a dozen exhibits with diverse items ranging from original items confiscated from local inmates, the iron-barred jail cells, and a military room with period uniforms and weaponry. To antique glass and pottery displays, an old-fashion children’s room and kitchen, and various 19th-century industrial items that highlight the region’s agricultural and Erie Canal heritage. The Carriage Barn, a nearby outbuilding, contains even more exhibits including a full-size horse-drawn carriage and cutter sleigh.
