Shaker Heritage Society

Details

An official Path Through History Site! The site of the first Shaker Village is hidden in plain sight, across the street from Albany International Airport. Once a bustling hive of industry and ecstatic worship, this is the site where the most successful utopian experiment in American history laid its roots. Today, the empty buildings constitute a sort-of ghost town, the beautiful grounds of which are open for the public to explore and enjoy. There are ruins, gardens, historic buildings, an historic apple orchard, a museum filled with family friendly interactive exhibits, a gift shop, and the Shaker Cemetery, where Mother Ann Lee, Shaker founder and female messiah, is buried. We offer a regular schedule of programming that preserves historic craft and the legacy of Shaker beliefs. Major annual events include our Holiday Market that has attracted thousands of visitors for decades. Visitors can enjoy guided walking tours from April to October. Suggested donation of $5/person.
