Smithtown Historical Society

The Smithtown Historical Society is committed to the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of Long Island’s heritage for the education and enjoyment of the public. Through research, education, conservation, and community activities, we seek to strengthen the ties to our rich heritage. Our Historical Society sits on more than 22 acres of land on Main Street, Smithtown. There are many visitors to this property who look for a respite as they step back in time and walk the long dirt road that extends from one end of the property to the other. To make the most of a walk through the property, rambling from west to east, the walker can download the Smithtown Historical Society Walking Tour app, which is narrated by Town Historian Bradley Harris. On this tour, the visitor will encounter the Homestead, which in its restored state will be a welcome site. Mr. Harris’s narrative, which covers all the buildings on the property, provides the walker with a lively historical perspective about the Homestead’s inhabitants as well as a clear description of the structure’s physical characteristics. The Society recently received a grant to create a Digital Tapestry for the Epenetus Smith Tavern, which is located on the west side of the property. In the Tavern, the visitor using their phone, will scan the portrait of an individual connected to the building and learn via a recording about that person’s role in our town’s history.
