If you’re ever heading south on the Sprain Brook Parkway, it’s practically impossible to miss the striking 165-yard par-3 No. 13, with its modern bridge and island-like protected green. Longtime Sprain Lake head golf professional Tom Avezzano Sr. says it’s like “free advertising” for his course. “Years ago, the back of the 13th (hole) was surrounded by trees, which blocked the view from the Parkway,” said Tom Avezzano, 77, who oversees the par-70, 6010-yard course.
Avezzano not only has been the course’s head professional since 1975, but as a 12-year-old in 1956 began caddying on Sprain Lake and soon afterward started working in the pro shop.
Sprain Lake is extremely popular among women players. There is a popular women’s group who regularly plays Sprain Lake that is managed by local LPGA representatives.
