Steinmetz Park

Lands were first purchased in 1931 and not long thereafter were designated as Second Ward Park. Additional lands were purchased throughout the 1930s and the park grew to nearly 45 acres. Eventually, the park was named Steinmetz Park, after Charles Proteus Steinmetz, one of America’s brightest scientists, cofounder of General Electric, and Commissioner of Parks and City Planning in Schenectady during the formation of both Steinmetz Park and Central Park. For decades Steinmetz Park served as a recreational gathering place for citizens of all ages and walks of life. Swimming was particularly popular and often families would come for the day and bring a picnic. The park served as a cultural, economic, and environmental benefit to the Second Ward neighborhood. Steinmetz Park remains a vital component of the Van Vranken and Goose Hill Neighborhood. Features such as the Pond, the Historic Wall, the Bath House, and the large tracts of woods make the 45-acre park a unique and attractive place to visit.
