The '76 House

Details

An official Path Through History Site! The ‘76 House, American's oldest tavern, is a 300-year-old structure located in Tappan, NY (Part of the Tappan Historic District) that was restored to its pristine condition by the Norden Family. Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, The `76 House served as a meeting place for local patriots during the American Revolutionary War, and also welcomed General George Washington for dining on occasion. The most celebrated episode in the history of The ’76 House was when the tavern served as the prison of the Revolution’s most notorious spy, Major John André, who plotted with the arch traitor Benedict Arnold, for the surrender of West Point. He was eventually found guilty and hanged as a spy on the hill behind the tavern. Built in the mid-1600's, the site is owned and operated by Robert Norden who has done significant restoration work on the property over the years, to restore it to its original glory. Today, patrons enjoy fabulous food in a one-of-a-kind setting that features four glowing fireplaces, vintage portraits, historical certificates and documents, as well as costumes and artifacts dating back to the Revolutionary War. The `76 House is not only a great American restaurant, it's also one of the Hudson Valley's most significant American Revolutionary War sites.
