Upper Delaware Scenic Byway

An official Path Through History Site! Route 97 was extolled as "The Most Scenic Highway in the East" at public dedication ceremonies for the new state highway on August 30, 1939. This beautiful corridor parallels the Delaware River along the border between New York and its New Jersey and Pennsylvania neighbors. Dramatic cliffs, sweeping vistas and glimpses of wildlife can all be found along the route. in 2024 the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway won the 2024 National Scenic Byway Foundation’s (NSBF) Partnership Award for its “Festival of the Founding Fish," ten days of history, music, food, fish, and fun held throughout the Byway’s communities celebrating the migratory American shad, and its critical role in sustaining Washington’s Colonial Army through the winter.
