With fireworks, parades, sand sculpting, and baseball, Coney Island returns for a season of family-friendly fun
Coney Island (March 24, 2026) – This weekend, Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, will mark the return of the neighborhood’s iconic amusement parks, attractions, restaurants, and cultural institutions. On Palm Sunday, Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park will host the 71st Annual Palm Sunday Opening and the Blessing of the Rides, a cherished decades-long tradition of wishing for a safe, successful, and joyful season ahead.
“After a long winter, we’re very excited to welcome families back to Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park,” said Denos Vourderis, Operations Manager at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park. “Opening day always feels like a fresh start, and with the return of warmer days, we’re looking forward to creating another season of unforgettable moments.”
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on the boardwalk at West 12th Street with the NYC Fire Department Ceremonial Unit presenting the nation’s colors, followed by remarks from elected officials and community leaders. Immediately following the ceremony, the first 106 guests in line will receive a complimentary ride on the historic Wonder Wheel, marking the 106th anniversary of the legendary ferris wheel.
Coney Island has always been one of New York City’s most iconic destinations, and opening day marks the moment it all comes back to life,” said Cindy Vourderis, Events, Marketing & Public Relations Manager for the Alliance for Coney Island. “After months of being quiet, the businesses reopen, the boardwalk fills up, and the heartbeat of Coney Island is back. The positive energy is what makes it different and unique. In a world that can feel overwhelming, this is where people come to have fun, let go, and forget everything else for a while.”
Starting at 11 a.m., Luna Park in Coney Island will continue the day’s festivities with its traditional Egg Cream Christening on the iconic Cyclone Roller Coaster.. Visitors can enjoy complimentary egg creams outside the Cyclone from Brooklyn’s own Seltzer Boys, along with live entertainment throughout the day.
Adding to the excitement of the season, the Brooklyn Cyclones kick off their 2026 season on April 3rd at Maimonides Park, bringing a lively, family-friendly atmosphere to the boardwalk with high-energy games, engaging promotions, and fan-favorite theme nights like Seinfeld Night and Star Wars Night.
“Coming off a championship season, we’re proud to celebrate 25 years of Cyclones baseball in Brooklyn and welcome fans back for another great summer at the ballpark,” said Steve Cohen, Vice President of the Brooklyn Cyclones. “Opening day sets the tone for the season, and we’re looking forward to having fans back in the stands, with fireworks following the 6:40 p.m. game.”
A cornerstone on the Coney Island boardwalk, the New York Aquarium invites guests to discover the wonders of the ocean through engaging exhibits, up-close animal encounters, and interactive programming. Home to sea lions, sharks, and a wide variety of marine species, the aquarium offers a unique, family-friendly experience.
“We are delighted to be a part of Coney Island’s action-packed 2026 season,” said Leigh Ann Clayton, Director of New York Aquarium. “All season long, our state-of-the-art exhibits and family-friendly spring/summer programs – including Ocean Shell-a-bration and Shark Party – combine education and entertainment to connect New Yorkers with ocean wildlife here and around the world.”
Throughout the summer, the aquarium will host a series of weekend programs featuring Wildlife Theater, marine-themed activities, keeper chats, and interactive experiences. Seasonal highlights include Ocean Shell-a-bration in celebration of World Oceans Day on July 6 and 7, as well as Shark Party on July 11–12 and July 18–19, highlighting the important role sharks play in marine ecosystems.

Open on weekends through Memorial Day, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Coney Island’s legendary past. Admission is free, and guests can explore vintage exhibits, rare photographs, and unique memorabilia that celebrate the rich heritage of “America’s Playground.”
That rich history comes to life just down the boardwalk through the world-famous Coney Island Sideshow, run by Coney Island USA, where thrilling live performances like sword swallowing, fire eating, and more pay homage to the neighborhood’s historic sideshow tradition. Performances kick off Memorial Day Weekend, with select shows taking place on weekends in March and April.
