NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation - logoFamily Fishing Fun for All Ages and Abilities on Saturday, June 6

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Onondaga County Parks today announced a free, family-friendly learn to fish event on Saturday, June 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery, 1672 Route 321, in Elbridge.

“One of the best ways to ‘Get Outside and Get Offline’ consistently is to find a fun activity like fishing that really engages you with the outdoors,” DEC Region 7 Director Dereth Glance said. “Join DEC at this yearly event for free – no license or equipment needed – to learn how to fish and find a new passion outside. The event is open to all ages, levels, and abilities, and it is family friendly, so you can bring everyone.”

During the event participants can learn about fish identification, aquatic invertebrates, and how to cook and clean fish during three, 15-minute instructional sessions presented by DEC. Participants can practice fishing in a trout pond on site.

The event is free, and fishing licenses are not required to participate in the program. Fishing poles, tackle, bait, and educational materials will be provided. The event is catch-and-release only. Children under age 16 must be supervised. Contact Region 7 Fisheries with questions at (607) 753-3095 or email fwfish7@dec.ny.gov.

DEC sponsors several free learn to fish events throughout the state where possession of a fishing license is not required. Details about upcoming Learn to Fish events are available on DEC's website. These events complement Governor Kathy Hochul’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” initiative that promotes physical and mental health by helping New York’s kids and families to put down their phones and computers, take a break from social media, and enjoy recreation and outdoor social gatherings.
