Mount Morris, N.Y. -- The Genesee Valley Council on the Arts (GVCA) dares you to enter the darkened halls of history for a haunted house like no other ever before! On four nights in October, thrill-seekers will step into the shadowy corridors of the Murray Hill Campus, the former Mount Morris Tuberculosis Sanitorium (1936-1971), for a one-of-a-kind immersive fright fest: Haunted House – Survive the Sanitorium.
Adventurous spirits can start lining up at 7pm on Friday/Saturday nights of October 17th,18th, 24th, and 25th for excursions which run every 10-15 minutes. Attendees will exchange online tickets ($15 pre-sale) for an entry pass into the haunted house. If you dare, tickets can also be purchased, day of, at the door for $20.
Imagine the scene as the three-story sanitorium transforms into a nightmarish medical laboratory where Dr. Morte Decesso, an erratic scientist, is racing to curtail a mysterious new illness spreading through Livingston County. Visitors will become part of the chilling storyline as they traverse the sanitorium’s stairwells and hidden chambers, encountering experimental “treatments,” deranged attendants, and the lingering spirits of those who never made it out.
“Our campus already has a spine-tingling atmosphere with the majestic buildings set on a hilltop overlooking Livingston County,” remarked GVCA Executive Director Morgan Hellquist. “Layer that with a storyline about medical experiments gone wrong, at a former tuberculosis sanitorium, and you’ve got an unforgettable haunted experience rooted in both history and horror!”
This event is part of the Keep the Arts Alive 2025 initiative created by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts. Money raised will support future programs in jeopardy of being eliminated by funding cuts. Earlier fundraising events included a live concert featuring local bands and a traditional square dance with a barbecue. The final fundraiser of the campaign, hosted by the presenting sponsor, Big Tree Inn, will be a holiday bazaar held in December to showcase creations from local artisans.
“We are constantly looking for ways to celebrate all art forms, and for this event, we will utilize local actors for the characters who appear in the sanitorium,” reflected Hellquist. “We’ve tapped into many talented stage hands who have helped us create the backdrop to our storyline and we hope to scare the wits of those who venture into the haunted house.“
Brave visitors will enter the waiting room first and then venture into the doctor’s lab where desperate experimental treatments blur the line between medicine and madness. The only way out is through a tunnel which goes directly to the hospital. There they will witness chilling attempts by nurses to “heal” the asylum patients. The visitors must attempt to escape through the doctor’s home, which is the actual former apartment of the physician who lived there in the 1930’s. No matter what happens, the question to answer is, “Will anyone survive the sanitorium or will everyone become the next experiment?”
