Artist Sir Alfred J. Munnings (1878–1959) studied, rode, bred, and lived with horses, instilling him with an extraordinary perception of the equine form and spirit. His work was widely admired during his time, and he was sought after by royalty and wealthy horse owners for commissions. Portraits of thoroughbreds and animated, vivid racing scenes established Munnings as a master of British Sporting Art.
