Fort Ticonderoga - Caught in the CrossfireA two-day REAL TIME REVOLUTION® Living History Event October 25-26

Ticonderoga, N.Y. [October 15, 2025] – Join Fort Ticonderoga for its next "REAL TIME REVOLUTION®," living history event on October 25-26 and explore an often-overlooked story in the American Revolution. Experience the harrowing stories and daily life of captured British soldiers and their families as prisoners of war.

In the fall of 1775, following American victories along the Richelieu River, British soldiers and their families found themselves caught in a rapidly developing conflict, facing an uncertain future. This living history weekend offers a unique glimpse into their precarious situation as prisoners of war—even before American patriots formally declared independence. Discover the continuing campaign in Canada as the Northern Department of the Continental Army fought hard for a series of fall victories.

“The handling of British prisoners of war forced deep soul-searching about how the Continental Army defined itself,” said Fort Ticonderoga Vice President of Public History, Stuart Lilie. “Join us to see the first-hand experience of British soldiers and their families as the Continental Army scrambled to deal with their recent success.”

Highlighted programming throughout the weekend captures Fort Ticonderoga’s central role in the Northern Department, acting as a vital hub for sending supplies and reinforcements northward while simultaneously moving British prisoners to the south. Uncover the complexities of capturing prisoners in this new war and the challenges faced by the once common kindred. Visitors will become immersed in the details of daily life for British prisoners, from living off Continental Army rations to traveling on foot and by boat, all under American guard. See how rank and class transcended sides, as officers from the British and Continental Army often enjoyed the company of their fellow Englishmen, separate from the enlisted soldiers.

During a special presentation, Fort Ticonderoga Curator, Dr. Matthew Keagle, will share the latest research on the fraternization between British and Continental Army officers, including a legendary encounter between Colonel Henry Knox and British martyr, John André.

This event is included with Fort Ticonderoga’s Campaign Season general admission. November-April, Fort Ticonderoga will launch a new schedule of programs during its Winter Quarters season where visitors will be immersed in exciting living history events, engaging seminars, specialty programs, behind-the-scenes VIP Tours, and hands-on workshops.
