Saratoga Springs, NY — The Saratoga Springs History Museum invites the public to an evening of history, discovery, and storytelling with author and historian Glenn Underwood on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Museum, located in the historic Canfield Casino in Congress Park.
Underwood will present Discovering George Foster Peabody, an engaging lecture based on his newly published 500+ page book that explores the life and legacy of George Foster Peabody, a banker, philanthropist, and reformer whose influence helped shape Saratoga Springs, Lake George, and New York State.
Peabody's vision and generosity contributed to institutions and preservation efforts that continue to impact the region today, including Saratoga Spa State Park, Yaddo, public libraries, and numerous conservation initiatives. Yet despite his significant contributions, his story remains largely unknown to many residents and visitors.
The presentation is the culmination of nearly eight years of research conducted by Underwood, whose family owns Twin Birches Cottages in Lake George, located on the former grounds of Peabody's summer estate, Abenia. What began as a search for photographs and historical records evolved into an extensive exploration of Peabody's correspondence, relationships, and civic influence.
Drawing from archival materials, rare photographs, and personal letters, Underwood reveals Peabody's connections with prominent figures of his era, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Spencer and Katrina Trask, Edward Morse Shepard, and other influential leaders who helped shape New York's cultural and civic landscape.
"This program offers a unique opportunity to discover one of the most influential and often overlooked individuals in our region's history," said James Parillo, Museum Director of the Saratoga Springs History Museum.
Following the lecture, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the author and purchase signed copies of Discovering George Foster Peabody.
