From West Point to the Purple Heart

Orange County, N.Y. - Everyone knows about the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, but few are aware of how deeply Orange County, N.Y., influenced our nation’s founding, formative moments and milestones. Historical sites abound in Orange County, including a horse racing museum and one of the most complete mastodon skeletons you’ll ever see. But the Revolution-era sites make visiting Orange County a must for military history buffs and anyone interested in the origins of the nation we have become.

- West Point Museum: The U.S. Army Center of Military History, West Point, N.Y.: The renowned museum at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point features exhibitions that start with the garrisoning of West Point during the Revolutionary War. Displays include a World War I tank.
- Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, Newburgh, N.Y.: The nation’s first publicly owned historic site was Gen. George Washington’s headquarters in 1782 and 1783. His vision and contributions to our budding nation, some originating at this location, include rejecting the idea of an American monarchy. Tour the museum and climb the Tower of Victory to the restored belvedere.
- The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, New Windsor, N.Y.: While in Newburgh, Gen. George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit, the forerunner to the Purple Heart. The Hall of Honor features interactive stations, a Purple Heart registry and a UH-1H “Huey” helicopter.
- Fort Montgomery State Historic Site, Fort Montgomery, N.Y.: Tour the remains of a 14-acre fortification overlooking the Hudson River and learn about the Oct. 6, 1777 battle, when British, Loyalist and Hessian forces attacked Fort Montgomery and nearby Fort Clinton.
