ECHDC - Canalside2018 programming and events schedule includes new activities, music, fitness, food and family fun

Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) and Canalside Management Group (CMG) today announced Canalside’s exciting 2018 season of summer events and programming.  This year, Canalside will host hundreds of programs and daily activities from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, as well as special events, on Buffalo’s waterfront.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the opening of the 2018 navigation season along the 524-mile New York State Canal System, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The eastern Erie Canal, stretching from Brewerton to Waterford, opens today. The remainder of the system, including the Erie Canal, from Brewerton to Lockport, and the Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals, opens on May 18.

Waterford, NY- The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the New York State Canal Corporation have teamed up to sponsor 36 festivals and events in 2018 to showcase the Canalway Corridor’s nationally significant heritage and the tremendous recreational appeal of the waterway and Canalway Trail today. Events include cycling and paddling tours, canal festivals, and concerts on the waterfront.

Buffalo, NY, March 15, 2018—The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) and Canalside today announced that the 2018 GlassBarge tour will visit Buffalo, docking at Canalside on August 3-5. As the 2018 signature event for the statewide celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial, GlassBarge will offer free public glassmaking demonstrations at each scheduled stop during its four-month tour.

Dozens of Celebrations and Events Planned Across New York State to Mark Historic Milestone

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today unveiled a series of celebrations and events being planned across New York State to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal. An engineering marvel that stimulated trade, exploration and invention, the canal project created the first superhighway across New York, connecting Albany and Buffalo and improving transportation to and from New York City by linking the Hudson River to Lake Erie.

"The Erie Canal was critical in establishing New York as a national hub for commerce and industry, and today offers boaters unparalleled views and access to our canalside communities," Governor Cuomo said. "In commemorating this anniversary, we celebrate the canal’s rich heritage as well as its pivotal role in promoting economic development and tourism today. I urge visitors to come experience the many events planned for the bicentennial celebration."…

Waterford, N.Y. – As New York celebrates the 200th anniversary of the building of the Erie Canal in 2017, amateur and professional photographers are invited capture the canal corridor’s distinctive sense of place for the 12th annual Erie Canalway Photo Contest. Winning photos will be featured in the 2018 Erie Canalway calendar.

Images should convey the wealth of things to do and see along the waterway and express the unique character of the canal and canal communities.
