East Meredith, N.Y. – Time to put on your red-checkered flannel shirt! The perennial fall favorite, the Woodsmen’s Festival at Hanford Mills Museum, will be held on Saturday, October 14. The Woodsmen’s Club of the SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, which competes nationally, will be demonstrating their lumberjack skills, including overhand and underhand chop, ax throwing, and cross cut sawing.

Fishing Derby at Hanford MillsEast Meredith, N.Y. – A sweet reward is coming thanks to all those who cut and hauled ice at the Ice Harvest Festival at Hanford Mills Museum. On that February day, more than seven tons of ice were cut from the Mill pond and then stored in the Ice House. On July 4th, that ice will be used to make ice cream on a steam-powered churn, and visitors to the Museum’s Independence Day Celebration can sample the cool treat.

Bethel, N.Y. –  Spring of 2017 brought a wide range of exciting programming to Bethel Woods – from Night in the Woods, a party for a cause, to Love For Sale: Commercialization of the Counterculture, The Museum’s new special exhibit set in a 1970 suburban home, to Project: Identity’s free teen programs that explored the arts and humanities. Now as summer begins to heat up, Bethel Woods has also been added to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

Bethel, NY (May 25, 2017) – The Museum at Bethel Woods will again take part in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Hanford Mills Museum Free Family SaturdayEast Meredith, N.Y. – Hanford Mills Museum will offer the first in a series of Free Family Saturdays on May 27. In addition to guided tours of the Museum’s water-powered sawmill, gristmill and woodworking shop, visitors can enjoy special kid-friendly activities as well as music by Catfish Meyer. Meyer will perform acoustic rock and folk music from 11 am to 2 pm.

“Free Family Saturdays are an opportunity for kids and their parents or grandparents to explore and learn together. And, with music by Catfish Meyer, it makes for an enjoyable outing,” says Liz Callahan, the Museum’s executive director.  She noted that visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch.

Eugene Speicher PaintingAlbany, N.Y. – The New York State Museum today announced the acquisition of a significant collection of artwork of the historic Woodstock Art Colony. The collection includes 1,500 paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and archival material and represents more than 170 artists from the early 20th century art colony in Woodstock, NY.

Long before the famous music event in 1969, Woodstock was home to what is considered America’s first intentional year-round arts colony: the historic Woodstock Art Colony, founded in 1902. Its artists have been the focus of collector and donor Arthur Anderson for three decades, resulting in the largest comprehensive art collection of its type.
