Staatsburg, N.Y. (1/15/26) — Not only a fashionable “Queen of Gilded Age High Society,” Ruth Livingston Mills, who lived at Staatsburgh, was also rather athletic and loved to ice skate! And she was in good company, as her family, friends and servants also enjoyed gliding across the Hudson River near the mansion. Staatsburgh State Historic Site invites children to a Victorian skating party craft program, to make a diorama of their own imagined skating event.
All craft materials will be supplied, along with hot chocolate, and an optional guided walk afterward, to Mills Cove, where the residents of Staatsburg would enjoy their skating parties. The 60-minute workshop is appropriate for children ages 6 and up, accompanied by an adult. An optional walk from the mansion to Mills Cove will follow the workshop. Tickets are $5/child, plus Eventbrite fee and can be purchased at https://FOMAS.eventbrite.com
Staatsburgh’s 79-room mansion overlooking the Hudson River is in the hamlet of Staatsburg, between Hyde Park and Rhinebeck. A time capsule of the Gilded Age, Staatsburgh retains its original furnishings and opulent décor. The historic estate grounds surrounding the mansion, now Ogden Mills & Ruth Livingston Mills Memorial State Park, offer scenic walking paths as well as woodland trails.
Staatsburgh State Historic Site is open for guided mansion tours by reservation; to attend a mansion tour, please make advance reservations on www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS ; admission is charged upon arrival. Visitors may also enjoy a picnic or stroll by the Hudson River, or a hike along the woodland trails in Mills Memorial State Park.
