Yonkers, NY (July 8, 2024) — For the seventh consecutive year, the Hudson River Museum is proud to announce that we have won two Best of Westchester 2024 awards. This year, the Museum has garnered the Editor’s Pick for Best Exhibition (South County) for Kengo Kito: Unity on the Hudson, and Readers’ Pick for Best Art Gallery. Best of Westchester is Westchester Magazine’s annual survey of the best that Westchester has to offer, from food and drink, beauty and shopping, to fun and leisure.
“It’s an honor to be named a Best of Westchester winner for seven years in a row,” stated Director and CEO Masha Turchinsky. “It is especially gratifying to have Kengo Kito’s Unity on the Hudson, in our West Wing, recognized. Kito’s work activated our new galleries and brought so much joy to thousands of visitors. We are also especially proud that HRM was selected as a Readers’ Pick for Best Art Gallery. This is a testament to the variety and quality of art we always aim to present at the Museum and it’s gratifying to know it resonates with our audiences year-round."
Kengo Kito: Unity on the Hudson, on view from June 16–September 24, 2023, was the inaugural exhibition of the Museum’s West Wing galleries. Using more than 2,100 colorful hula hoops, artist Kengo Kito conceived a monumental, site-specific work symbolizing humanity’s interconnectedness and our relationship with the Hudson River. The result was an immersive experience where visitors walked around and under the multicolored intersecting circles as a metaphor for our bonds with each other and with nature. Westchester Magazine writes, “Great art can make viewers reconsider everyday objects while simultaneously redefining the space in which they are exhibited. Kengo Kito’s eye-catching installation, Unity of the Hudson, did just that, filling the Hudson River Museum’s sleek new West Wing galleries with roughly 2,500 brightly colored hula-hoops floating up toward the sky.”
This summer, the HRM is presenting new exhibitions Red Grooms: Drawing "The Bookstore," featuring never-before-seen preparatory drawings to celebrate the 45th anniversary of our beloved and iconic installation “The Bookstore,” and Neighboring Visions: Westchester Artists Then and Now, which breaks down imagined barriers between communities by pairing historical landscape and figurative paintings from the Bronxville Historical Conservancy with compelling contemporary works by Westchester artists. Also on view is Rivers Flow / Artists Connect; Kindred Worlds: The Priscila and Alvin Hudgins Collection; It Takes 2: Unexpected Pairings; and A Feast for the Eyes: Sumptuous Still Lifes.
Alongside our summer exhibitions, we are excited for the start of our Summer Amphitheater Series, with FREE performances every Friday and Saturday evenings from July 12–August 17 at 8pm.
