Rochester, NY (December 5, 2025) — With the holiday season underway and school breaks just around the corner, the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) invites families, visitors, and art lovers to explore Frontiers of Impressionism: Paintings from the Worcester Art Museum. Now one month into its run and on view through March 1, 2026, the exhibition offers a bright, colorful, and inspiring escape—perfect for entertaining visiting relatives, making memories with kids, or adding a cultural experience to seasonal celebrations.
Experience the journey of Impressionism
Museum-goers will experience the journey of Impressionism through the lens of more than thirty artists— European and American—including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and John Singer Sargent. Frontiers of Impressionism chronicles the emergence of Impressionism in nineteenth-century France, its expansion to much of Europe and the United States, and the lasting changes these progressive artists have brought to the art world.
A special highlight is Claude Monet’s 1908 Waterlilies, the first work from the celebrated series ever acquired by a museum, on rare view in Rochester. The work joins three other Monets on view at the Memorial Art Gallery, part of the museum’s permanent collection.
Make an Impression with an artful gift
MAG invites visitors to shop artfully this holiday season at THE STORE @ MAG, with Impressionism-inspired gifts, original works by local artists, and museum merchandise. U.S. shipping is available, and gift wrapping is free. Extra holiday shopping opportunities will be offered on Tuesdays, December 9, 16, and 23.
Enjoy exhibition-related programing and artmaking
Throughout December and January, MAG offers a lineup of programs inspired by Frontiers of Impressionism. In December, guests can enjoy the Notes of Impressionism DeTOUR (December 11), featuring live music from Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra musicians, as well as an Art Start: Impressionism Tour & Technique that same evening in the Creative Workshop (pre-registration required). On December 13, visitors are invited to an accessible ASL Guided Tour of the exhibition led by Deaf guide Jackie Schertz.
January brings a new series of Impressionism-focused classes and events at the Creative Workshop. Intermediate Impressionist Painting begins January 15, offering a ten-week course for students looking to deepen their technique. Young artists can join Mini Monets starting January 17, an eight-week class for ages 4–6 filled with creative projects and gallery visits. Adult learners may explore art history in Impressionism: Beyond the Sunrise, a six-week class beginning January 21, or discover painting fundamentals in Impressionist Painting for Beginners, which begins January 26. Additional January programs include another Art Start: Impressionism Tour & Technique and Make a Connection! on January 9, and A Hazy Weave DeTOUR: Historic Fashion through the Lens of Impressionism on January 22, exploring the relationship between Impressionist art and period fashion.
