Glen Cove, NY - The North Shore Historical Museum is pleased to announce an upcoming lecture by historian Dr. Richard Harris, titled “Reluctant Revolutionaries: Rebellion in the Age of Reason.” The program will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2026, and explores a compelling and often overlooked dimension of America’s path to independence.

As communities across the nation commemorate the American Revolution, familiar milestones—such as the Boston Tea Party, the battles of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Long Island, the Declaration of Independence, and the British surrender at Yorktown—take center stage. Yet many colonists remained deeply connected to Britain and were hesitant to support the cause of independence.

Dr. Harris will examine how Enlightenment ideals and persuasive voices—including Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine—helped transform widespread hesitation into a unified revolutionary movement. His talk will illuminate the intellectual and cultural forces that convinced reluctant colonists that independence offered the best path forward.

This lecture is part of NSHM’s ongoing commitment to presenting engaging, accessible programs that deepen public understanding of local and national history.
