Youngstown, N.Y. – On Saturday, February 15, Old Fort Niagara invites visitors to discover how people in colonial times survived and thrived during the winter months. Winter Warriors is an interactive living history program that teaches visitors valuable winter survival skills, such as how to build a campfire using flint and steel, construct a brush shelter, trek over the snow using snowshoes and employ natural fibers like wool to keep warm.Additional demonstrations include period cooking, musket firing, Native American foodways, battlefield tactics and letter writing using quill pens.
At 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. military interpreters will offer a special program entitled “From Fort to Forest.” This interactive presentation will demonstrate how European soldiers adapted to North American conditions, modifying both clothing and equipment to survive the harsh winter environment.
In the Fort’s Log Cabin, visitors can warm up and purchase hot soup made from 18th century recipes. The Fort will also offer a demonstration of how hot chocolate was made during colonial times.
Hours for the program are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. More information is available on the Fort’s website at www.oldfortniagara.org
