A Bold New Addition to Long Island’s Landscape and Artistic Legacy
Oyster Bay, N.Y. – A century after its creation as an exclusive private estate, Planting Fields is once again on the cusp of redefining its legacy with the unveiling of a new addition: the Piet Oudolf Garden. Designed by Piet Oudolf, the world-renowned landscape designer whose visionary, naturalistic gardens have reshaped the global landscape design scene, this new space will make its debut in summer 2026. It is a move that promises to elevate Long Island as a must-visit destination for art, nature, and architecture lovers from across the globe.
“The significance of the Piet Oudolf Garden is monumental—not just for Planting Fields, but for Long Island as a whole. This transformative garden will be the site’s most important addition since the Olmsted Brothers completed their design of the site in the 1930s”, says Dr. Gina J. Wouters, President and CEO of Planting Fields Foundation (PFF). “Celebrating the beauty and resilience of nature, the garden will offer visitors a mesmerizing, year-round journey through the seasons, with vibrant displays of plants, flowers, and grasses that evolve with the passage of time, much like Piet Oudolf’s iconic designs at the High Line in Manhattan and the Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park.”
“I’m excited to be designing a new garden for Planting Fields, which will be my first public project on Long Island. Planting Fields provides a wonderful background for my garden”, says Piet Oudolf. “The site’s layered landscape and ongoing cultural initiatives also create an environment to enjoy the garden through all seasons.”
For the first time in over a decade, Oudolf will create a public garden in New York, a state already known for its iconic parks and public spaces. The Piet Oudolf Garden at Planting Fields will elevate Planting Fields as a world-class destination, offering a rare opportunity to experience Oudolf’s visionary work in a public space. The new garden will seamlessly blend into the rich, layered landscape of the historic site, offering a place of quiet reflection, foster sustainability, encourage community engagement, and promote a deep appreciation for the natural world.
PFF invites individuals, foundations, and corporate partners to contribute to this transformative project. By supporting the Piet Oudolf Garden at Planting Fields, you’re aligning your vision with a cause that celebrates environmental stewardship, artistry, and community. With your support, this project will bring unparalleled beauty, sustainability, and cultural enrichment to Long Island, creating an enduring legacy that will draw visitors from near and far. Sponsorship opportunities are available now at a range of levels, and a Sponsor-A-Plant program launching at the end of June will provide additional ways to be part of this project.
