Schenectady County Historical SocietySchenectady, NY (January 9, 2024) – The Schenectady County Historical Society is excited to announce its winter lineup of programming.

Whether visitors want to dive into local history topics via SCHS' Winter Speaker Series, bring the kids for a family program, get outside with an SCHS Full Moon Walks, or delve into Schenectady's Black History, SCHS has something for everybody this season.

Mary Zawacki, executive director of SCHS, is particularly pleased with the diversity of programming the organization will offer this winter: "Our staff has come up with dozens of great programs that will keep people busy, learning, and above all, having fun during the cold months. We hope the Schenectady community and beyond sees something they like on our schedule of events and comes on in! I'm particularly excited to bring back our Full Moon Walks, which combine nature, exercise, and history with some delicious treats and a roaring fire. If anything we do at SCHS harkens back to the 18th century, it's the Full Moon Walks!"

Michael Diana, SCHS' Director of Education notes that the organization's Black History Month offerings will be an engaging and surprising look at Schenectady's Black history, "From the 19th century well into the modern period,
Black families were effectively sidelined from the central developments of Schenectady’s story. We at the Historical Society are working to uncover as much about them as we can, and we're eager to share some stories during Black History Month -- and of course throughout the rest of the year as well!"

SCHS' President, Dr. Mark Vermilyea, adds, "As always, I look forward to many of SCHS’ upcoming programs this year, including walking tours and invited speakers. I hope that you and your family enjoy some of the wonderful array of offerings that the SCHS staff has created this winter."

SCHS' full calendar of events can be viewed at https://schenectadyhistorical.org/events/, and tickets can be purchased there. Many programs are free or at a reduced price for SCHS members. Audrey Humphrey, SCHS' Director of Visitor Services and Membership is quick to add that, "through SCHS' two reciprocal museum pass programs (the North American and the Empire State museum reciprocal programs), SCHS members have a wonderful opportunity to visit hundreds of museums throughout New York and the USA for free!"
