Fiber WorkshopsAuburn, NY (Sept. 24, 2024) – Schweinfurth Art Center has lined up four multi-day fiber workshops through December that focus on surface design, recycling clothes, and felting. One 5-day workshop is online, and the rest are in person at the art center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn, NY.

The Layered Surface: Fusions, Transparency, and Photos

This 3-day class, taught by Ellen M. Blalock, explores techniques of sharing ones’ stories through fiber art. Students will explore several methods of using photographs and layering shears fabrics and non-woven materials. They will experiment with drawing, painting, and stitching on images infused into cloth and learn how to incorporate it into our fiber pieces.

COST: Schweinfurth members $470; nonmembers $480

Painting and Sculpting with Wool

Learn the art of wet felting and needle felting over this 2-day course, taught by Mallory Zondag. Students will explore wool’s versatility as an artistic medium, using pre-felt, mosaic, and needle felting techniques to create realistic paintings and 3-dimensional sculptures.

Fall Fiber Retreat 2024

Fiber artists of all kinds are invited to meet at the Schweinfurth Art Center for a weekend of creativity at our biannual retreat. Participants will have full access to the Art Center’s spacious sewing and dye/wet studios. Lunch is provided. Just bring yourself and your work!

COST: Schweinfurth members $130; nonmembers $140

Mind Your Mending Online Workshop

Get ahead of the fashion scene and restore your soul as you take time to mend, meditate, stitch, and recycle in this 5-day online workshop with Rosalie Dace. Take an old torn jacket, jeans with a gaping hole, or a favorite worn-out shirt and turn them into something unexpected and updated with simple appliqué patches and hand stitching.

COST: $560 for Schweinfurth members, $570 for nonmembers
