Winter Art CampWinter art camp for teens explores different dyeing techniques

Auburn, NY (Jan. 7, 2025) – Students aged 11 to 15 are invited to get messy as they explore tie dye, Shibori, batik, and other “resist” dyeing techniques in a weeklong Winter Break Art Camp at Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn.

In resist dyeing, artists use wax, chemicals, tying, or sewing fabric to prevent dye from reaching certain parts of the textiles when immersed. The areas that are protected from dye are called “resists” and remain the fabric's original color.

Students in this art camp, led by teaching artist Vanessa Johnson, will create a table runner, wall hanging, pillow, journal cover, and an abstract “Earth Sculpture” from their one-of-a-kind fabrics. As a bonus, students can bring something white that they would like to dye on Thursday.

The camp meets 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 17 to 21, 2025, at the art center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn. The cost is $135 for Schweinfurth members, $145 for nonmembers. Scholarships are available for children in need.
