Hyde Collection LogoModern Art, European Prints, and Kinetic Sculpture

Glens Falls, NY— The Hyde Collection is thrilled to announce the opening of three new summer exhibitions, inviting visitors from near and far to experience a rich variety of both historic prints and modern art. Each exhibition presents a unique lens through which to explore dynamic artistic mediums and genres, alongside selections from the Museum’s permanent collection.

On view at The Hyde June 7 - September 28, 2025:

George Rickey Across Time features kinetic stainless-steel sculptures in Wood Gallery, historic Hyde House Courtyard, and outside on the Museum lawn. George Rickey (1907–2002), a pioneer of kinetic sculpture, explored the intersections between engineering, abstract art, industry, and theory, creating stainless steel abstractions found in museum collections worldwide. The sculptures are engineered to move in response to air currents, dancing as they take on a new form with each passing moment. The Hyde and the George Rickey Foundation collaborated for two years on planning this traveling exhibition from the Foundation's collection, which The Hyde is the first to host. Four works by Rickey from The Hyde's permanent collection will also be on view.

“The George Rickey Foundation has been very fortunate to work with The Hyde Collection on this inaugural presentation of George Rickey Across Time before it is shown at other museums across the United States. The Hyde Collection has given particular attention to artists from the region such as David Smith, and George would have been gratified to have his work shown near his state-side home in East Chatham,” says Richard Benefield, Executive Director of George Rickey Foundation, Inc.

The exhibition marks the first time The Hyde's Two Lines Bronze Horizontal, a 9-foot-high moving "blade" sculpture Rickey created in 1964, will be on view; the work was received as part of the transformative Feibes and Schmitt gift in 2021 and recently conserved. This sculpture is visible through a large picture window along the approach to Hyde House, set against the backdrop of the Finch paper mill—the perfect frame to honor Museum founders Louis and Charlotte Hyde and the Pruyn family, co-founders of the mill. Visitors will have available complimentary family and adult versions of the printed exhibition tour guide, adding an interactive element to the exploration of Rickey’s work on the grounds.

Architect[ural] evokes a new way of thinking about abstraction with selections from The Hyde’s permanent collection, highlighting several major gifts of modern art over the past thirty years.

“The George Rickey and Architect[ural] exhibitions examine different approaches to abstract art. In Rickey’s case, abstraction is in the service of motion, where he uses a variety of geometric sculptural forms engineered to create unique types of movement,” explained The Hyde’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Dr. Derin Tanyol. “In the exhibition Architect[ural], abstraction is used in structural ways that evoke architectural form; the exhibition also includes more traditional media showing how visual artists engage with architecture. I hope both modern exhibitions at The Hyde will give visitors a greater sense of the calculated, carefully structured side of abstract art.”

On view at The Hyde now through September 21, 2025:

Prosperity and Exclusion: European Prints from 1500–1850 shares master works from the permanent collection that are seldom on display due to the fragile nature of paper, yet they provoke thoughtful reflections on society—both historically and in the present day.

“The Hyde has a rich collection of prints, spanning over 500 years of history. This exhibition focuses on prints—including woodcuts, engravings, and etchings—made in Europe between 1500 and 1850, and explores the theme of prosperity and the many ways in which people defined success. Visitors will have the chance to see works by well-known artists such as Dürer, Rembrandt, and Goya, with subjects ranging from Classical and Biblical themes to contemporary depictions of urban and rural life,” said Dr. Bryn Schockmel, Curator of the Permanent Collection and Related Exhibitions at The Hyde.

The Hyde Collection is expanding its hours from June 9 to August 25. Visitors can enjoy the Museum Thursday through Monday, 10 am to 5 pm. Learn more and plan a visit at www.hydecollection.org
