Lake George, N.Y. – John McGiff’s exhibition, Paintings as Vision, opens to the public at the Lake George Arts Project’s Courthouse Gallery, 1 Lower Amherst Street, Lake George, NY, at noon on Saturday, March 16th.  The artist’s reception will be held the same day from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. The reception is free of charge and open to the public.

McGiff, a painter and teacher for over forty years, recently relocated to the Hudson River Valley from Delaware, where he was Chair of the Arts Department at St. Andrews School in Middletown.

The artist states that he is ”… naturally inclined towards making groups of images, exploring a central idea and evolving a language of gesture, color and design that best expresses the interests that grow from this meditation, often over the span of years.”

McGiff is currently developing a series of paintings under the heading of Icarus Unbound that reinterprets Classic Greek mythological tales. This suite of six paintings will be on view in the exhibition along with several works of enigmatic interiors and figures placed in  a “Rag” house, referencing the palette and design patterns of Indian Ragamala paintings.

This exhibition is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York State Legislature; the Town and Village of Lake George; Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation; 518 Profiles; The Alfred Z Solomon Charitable Trust; and LGAP members.

The Courthouse Gallery is located in the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse, on Lower Amherst Street in Lake George, NY. During scheduled exhibitions our in-person office and gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday 12 – 5 pm, Saturday
12 – 4 pm
