Utica, N.Y. – Join Karen Foresti Hempson, a retired teacher and former college lecturer in social studies, for a presentation on her book, Shellback, inspired by real-life stories from Utica residents who lived through the Great Depression and World War II. This program takes place at the Oneida County History Center on Saturday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m. All ages are invited.

Shellback follows the narrative of a young Francis, the son of Italian Immigrant parents, as he tries to escape poverty by becoming a sailor and participating in major Pacific battles of World War II. The term “shellback” comes from a naval tradition that signifies that the sailor has crossed the equator.

Shellback is a fictional story that builds upon the themes introduced in her earlier work, Bean Pickers, American Immigrant Portraits, aimed at both adult and young adult audiences. Please join us to hear more about the art of historical storytelling.
