DEC to Host Free, Inclusive Learn-to-Fish Event at Utica Harbor Point

Family-Friendly Event Welcomes Anglers of All Ages and Abilities August 15

Utica, N.Y. - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County 4-H and the City of Utica, will host a free Learn-to-Fish event on Saturday, August 15, at Utica Harbor Point. Learning to fish encourages outdoor recreation, promotes stewardship of fisheries, and introduces participants to safe and responsible angling.

“Fishing is a lifelong outdoor tradition that connects people with New York’s natural resources,” said DEC Region 6 Director Randall Young. “Whether you are casting a line for the first time or introducing a child to fishing, this event provides a welcoming environment to experience the outdoors.”

The event is open to anglers of all ages, abilities, and experience levels. Participants can learn the fundamentals of fishing at their own pace while enjoying a fun, family friendly outdoor experience. Adaptive fishing equipment will be available to ensure everyone can participate. 

Fishing rods will be available to borrow, or participants may bring their own. Bait will be provided, and all fishing will take place from shore. Fish that are caught will be released. 

A fishing license is not required for this event, and preregistration is not necessary. Participants are welcome to arrive at any time during the event.

When: Saturday, August 15 from 10 a.m. to noon 

The event location is a short walk from the Genesee Street/Wurz Avenue bus stop, making it accessible by public transportation.
