Ceremonial first shot of the season May 5 at 10 AM
Lake Placid, N.Y. – An early blast of summer weather in mid-April has allowed the Whiteface Club and Resort in Lake Placid to open its storied golf course in early May.
Temperatures in the mid to high 70s in Upstate New York enabled the fabled track, designed by John Van Kleek and Walter Hagen, to begin play on Wednesday, May 3, weather permitting. Course superintendent Mike Sabatini and his experienced hands have been taking advantage of the weather, prepping the course in a treatment process that started last fall prior to the natural insulation provided by this winter’s snow accumulation.
“Temps between 75 and 80 degrees in April are certainly atypical for the Adirondacks,” said Mark Sperling, CEO of the Whiteface Companies. “But we welcomed the warmth which allowed the snow to depart quickly and opened a path for our crew to clean and cut the golf course sooner than expected.”
Mowers were seen cutting the entire course in recent weeks.
When the doors open, players will be welcomed by PGA club professional Perry Babcock and his amiable staff.
“We’re looking forward to seeing many familiar faces when we begin play this season,” said Babcock. “Club residents, members and visitors will find a course that came through the winter in great shape, and will only get better as the season rolls along.”
Babcock will officially open the season Friday, May 5, at 10 AM with the ceremonial shot from the first tee.
Players may walk or ride anytime. The Whiteface Club has expanded its luxury line of comfortable and smooth Yamaha golf carts that feature USB ports, roofs and windshields. Seasonal rates are available for frequent players.
The competition highlight is the return of the New York State Golf Association Senior Women’s Amateur Championships. Last held here in 2016, a field of approximately 100 will converge on the Whiteface Club for the 70th edition of this event. It will start with a practice round on Monday, Aug. 21. The 36-hole competition takes place Aug. 22-23 with 9 AM shotgun starts each day. This will mark the 19th state amateur championship event held at the Whiteface Club.
While Babcock is beginning his second season at the venerable golf course in the Adirondacks, Executive Chef Jonathan Studley, who joined the Whiteface Club team in December, will provide dining experiences for players and members in his first season. Since his arrival, Studley, whose impressive resume includes national and international establishments, has reimagined the menus and his staff. They will be unveiled at Café on the Green adjacent to the 18th green starting May 3, as well as the Moose Lodge Boathouse, overlooking the shores of Lake Placid lake, later in the spring.
The Café-On-The-Green features a pub-type environment surrounding the picturesque first tee, 18th green, putting green and fire-pit. Lunch is served Wednesday through Sunday throughout the spring, with dinners on the veranda starting May 4. Dinner service is available on Friday and Saturday as well.
This casual indoor-outdoor dining spot serves lunches and light fare consisting of hearty sandwiches, fresh salads, daily specials and ice-cold regional craft beer. It’s the perfect place to cap your round of golf, or as a relaxing meeting place to join friends.
“Hungry golfers, immediately after playing, will love the selections that are planned for the café,” stated Chef Studley. “Items such as the Smash Burger, Street Corn, Mediterranean Flatbread, Grilled Chicken Wrap and many more will satisfy everyone’s post-round palate.”
The Whiteface Club and Resort is sister property to the AAA Four Diamond Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa. The two luxury properties are separated by just three miles.

TENNIS
The Whiteface Club Tennis Center, headed by Tennis Director Ikuo Toishi, features Har-Tru courts, a full-service pro shop and stringing services all in a bucolic setting. The tennis center, with lessons, clinics and hitting sessions, welcomes season members as well as visiting guests, and is particularly encouraging to juniors. This is an outstanding environment to grow youngsters’ skills.
MARINA AND WATERFRONT
The waterfront is a picturesque lawn area which gently slopes towards a sandy beach and swimming area on Lake Placid lake. This is a special gathering place for family picnics, croquet and volleyball games, or to just relax while enjoying the spectacular scenery.
DINING
In addition to Café on the Green, Moose Lodge Boathouse is another of Chef Studley’s culinary options for visitors. The Boathouse offers a casual ambiance for lunch and dinner literally on the shores of Lake Placid. Whether it is dining al fresco on the beach, on the decks, on the “Captain’s Table” on the docks, or enjoying the experience of the boathouse’s indoor facilities, guests enjoy a varied seasonal menu appealing to everyone.
