February 10 & 11
Mumford, N.Y. – Genesee Country Village & Museum is excited to welcome visitors to a new Black History Weekend event on Saturday, February 10, and Sunday, February 11, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Guests are invited to explore Black history and culture from the Genesee Valley Region and the Greater Rochester area as they make their way around the museum’s 19th-century Historic Village.
Visit the Altay General Store to learn about the stories of Black Rochesterians like entrepreneur Austin Steward and Isaac Gibbs, see guest cooper Noah Shiffer at work, learn about the food traditions of Malinda Russell (the first known Black female published cookbook author) in the Livingston-Backus House, visit the Foster-Tufts House to learn about Juneteenth celebrations and the connections between food and family, and more.
Plus, the museum is excited to welcome special guests including David Shakes of the North Star Players who will be educating visitors about Frederick Douglass and the significance of the North Star newspaper, Tippy Hood who will be leading a poetry writing activity in the Romulus Seminary, and representatives from Big Springs Museum in Caledonia, NY, presenting their new “Heritage Shared” mobile exhibit.
On Sunday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m., museum staff will give a talk: “Past, Present, and Future of GCV&M” in the Town Hall Building. This talk will explore the museum’s latest research into figures like Nathaniel Rochester and the individuals he enslaved, and delve into a new grant that will allow the museum to further research and present to the public a more expansive history of enslavement in New York State.
